Wayfinding & Navigation Festival, 2009

No GPS needed. Follow the stars to Hawai‘i at the Second Annual Hilo Wayfinding Festival, hosted by ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai‘i, October 16-18, 2009. People first came to Hawai‘i 1,500-2,000 years ago, using celestial navigation as their guide. Highly-acclaimed navigators, including Kalepa Babayan, Kaimana Barcarse, Katherine Fuller, Chad Paishon and Nainoa Thompson will be leading panel discussions and workshops during the event.

September Directors Lecture Series

Dr. Paul Ho will present, "Whispers from the Universe: Studying the Heavens with the Submillimeter Array," Thursday, October 15 at the Keck Observatory’s Hualalai Learning Theater in Waimea and Saturday, October 17 at ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center’s planetarium in Hilo. The program begins at 7 p.m. in Waimea and 7:30 p.m. in Hilo. Space is limited to first-come, first served. In his presentation, Ho will describe how the SMA works and how astronomers use it to investigate star-forming regions and early galaxies. Ho will speak on behalf of Raymond Blundell, the director of SMA.



Free Teacher Workshops at ‘Imiloa

Hilo, Hawai‘i – ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center invites teachers in grades 6-12 for two free professional development workshops on October 8. These workshops focus on topics around returning to the Moon and aerospace. The two workshops will be facilitated by NASA education professionals and are aligned with state standards.

Aerospace in Hawaii Week, October 6-10, 2009

Celebrate Aerospace in Hawaii Week, October 6 – 10, at ‘Imiloa’s weeklong celebration including activities, workshops by NASA scientists, and free talks by internationally renowned science journalist, author and speaker, Andrew Chaikin, Astronauts John Herrington and Yvonne Cagle. Additional planetarium shows will be available including One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure and the 3-D Dawn of the Space Age. Then snuggle up under your sleeping bag at ‘Imiloa’s first sleepover!

‘Imiloa 3D Hitchhikers Guide to New Worlds: The Exoplanets

Hilo, Hawaii – ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center brings back its popular Thursday evening program "A 3D Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe," this time focusing on New Worlds: The Exoplanets, for a six-week run starting September 3, 2009 at 7:30 pm. The live planetarium program, hosted by Shawn Laatsch, ‘Imiloa planetarium manager, uses the 3D stereoscopic projection capability in the ‘Imiloa planetarium to "fly" off Earth. Exploring the local neighborhood of our solar system, the planets and their moons, and then traveling to the newest worlds beyond our own solar system that astronomers are now discovering in our Universe.
