April Maunakea Skies with Dr. Kumiko Usuda.
Deal a galactic hand in this months “Maunakea Skies” program at ‘Imiloa when Dr. Kumiko Usuda, Subaru Telescope, shows how the Mauna Kea Brand Astronomy Trading Cards can be used to teach about our Solar System, the Milky Way galaxy and other galaxies. This program is on Saturday, April 17, at 7 p.m. in the planetarium.
Before Dr. Usuda’s presentation, “Maunakea Skies” host Shawn Laatsch, planetarium manager, will provide observational highlights of the spring night-time skies over Hawai‘i, pointing out prominent constellations and stars one can see during this time of year.
Kumiko Usuda’s Mauna Kea Brand Astronomy Trading Cards is a wonderful tool that uses beautiful astronomical images of the 13 Maunakea telescopes to help share information about the Universe and these facilities used to study it. The audience will fly into the Solar System and Milky Way in 3D, learn how to use the cards and receive a free set to take home!
3D Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe: the New Universe
Hilo, Hawai'i - Put on your 3D glasses on Thursday nights and take an amazing virtual journey into the Universe in the 'Imiloa planetarium. 'Imiloa Astronomy Center brings back its popular Thursday evening program "A 3D Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe," for a six-week run starting April 8 at 7:30 pm. This time focusing on new 3D digital universe datasets from Maunakea and other observatories. This program is a limited run, ending Thursday May 13.
Free Merrie Monarch workshops at `Imiloa
'Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai‘i is partnering with the Merrie Monarch Festival to offer four days of free hula-related workshops and demonstrations for guests to enjoy during the popular week-long festival and competition. Special programs are offered in both English and Hawaiian.
From April 6 to April 9 ‘Imiloa will provide opportunities for guests to learn about the history and cultural significance of the hula and its practitioners. ‘Imiloa will provide hula-related programming each morning from 10:00-11:30 a.m., and 1:00-2:30 p.m. All programs are free to the public and will cover a wide range of hula topics. Standard admission fees only apply to the Center’s exhibit hall and its planetarium programs.
Plutoʻs Plight and the New Solar System
In the last decade, our picture of the solar system and its outskirts has changed dramatically. Once thought to be a lonely place only inhabited by Pluto and the occasional comet, we now know that there are a vast number of icy asteroids in Pluto’s neighborhood. The largest of these is Eris, sometimes called the “10th Planet” because it is larger than Pluto.
‘Imiloa's Friday Night Rock Show's Lights are Dimming
Hilo, Hawai‘i – ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center turns the volume down and is dimming the lights on the Friday night entertainment rock shows starting March 5. ‘Imiloa will end its weekly Friday night rock shows, having exhausted the current inventory of rock shows available for the planetarium.
