Science Rocks!
2011-2012 After-School Science Program
Grades four through six
Wednesday afternoons
See science everywhere!
Science Rocks! is ‘Imiloa's after-school science program for grades 4 through 6 (no exceptions) held every Wednesday afternoon between 2:30 and 4:30 pm. Download the information brochure and enrollment form (PDFs) or email Craig Mitchell, Youth Explorations Program Aide, at cmitchell@imiloahawaii.org.
The program runs through May 23, 2012. Our maximum enrollment is 20 students per session, and students can sign up for any or all sessions that interest them. Each week a different topic is introduced.
New topics include Science of Art and Film Animation, Food Chemistry, and Locomotion, Sports and Games as well as some of our usual favorites such as Rockets and the Science of Cool.
The program's goals are to:
- Introduce basic science concepts in physics, chemistry, engineering and technology through interactive demonstrations and activities that challenge students to think of explanations.
- Integrate basic math that "grounds" the science concepts learned.
- Create experiences that inspire students to search out more knowledge, ask more questions, and seek their own answers.
- Help students acquire a solid background in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills.
- Develop critical thinking skills and creativity.
This year we are limiting parental involvement to the first two interested parents who would like to apply as volunteers at Imiloa. Students are welcome to bring snacks. Ice water will be provided.
