3D Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe
This is a series of live, ‘Imiloa Planetarium programs using 3D stereoscopic projection. Shawn Laatsch, ‘Imiloa’s planetarium manager, hosts the evening presentations which are offered throughout the year, as he "flies" participants out into space on a unique and engaging tour through the Universe.
Audiences travel to our local planets and their moon systems, zip through the rings of Saturn, and explore the asteroids. Visit exoplanets orbiting other stars, explore nebulae and go far beyond to star clusters and other areas of our Milky Way galaxy. Travel beyond the Milky Way, into inter galactic space and explore our local group of galaxies, the Virgo cluster of galaxies to the farthest edge of the Universe.
Each 3D Hitchhikers Guide program features new data and imagery from Maunakea and other astronomical observatories, highlighting the latest discoveries.
The 3D Hitchhikers Exploration of the Universe live planetarium program will be presented in at 7:00 PM on selected Thursday evenings.
Next 3D Hitchhikers Guide:
The program will be offered weekly, starting on September 1, on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. through September 29. Audience may wish to add dinner to their evening as ‘Imiloa’s Sky Garden Restaurant is open Thursday nights for dinner starting at 5 p.m. The restaurant, which specializes in Chinese cuisine in the evenings, is also open on Friday and Saturday nights.
Laatsch will begin by exploring our solar system, flying by Jupiter and Saturn, and moving outward to our local celestial neighborhood. Travelling outward audiences will explore the Milky Way as our home galaxy, and then take a look at its place in the Local Group of galaxies. The journey will continue into inter galactic space exploring the Virgo cluster of galaxies, Tully Data Base, Sloan Digital Sky Survey and to the farthest extent that our astronomical instruments are able to show us. Take a virtual 3D flight through the cosmos in a new and exciting way. Feel as if you are "jumping off the Earth" as you voyage through time and space.
The “3D Hitchhikers Guide” live planetarium program will be presented in ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center’s 120-seat planetarium at 7:00 p.m. Admission $10 for non-members and Membership level discounts apply. Pre-purchase tickets available at the ‘Imiloa front desk or by phone, Visa and MasterCard accepted, call (808) 969-9704.
