Welcome to the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center.  We are offering ASTC Post Conference Experiences October 5 to 8.  Participants can take part in the ‘Imiloa dinner experience with either two Island tour experiences or partake in a special planetarium workshop. The island of Hawai‘i has such climate and ecological diversity from the sea to high above Maunakea, it brings the natural laboratory to the door step.   Just a short Island hop to the Island of Hawai‘i and experience why it is known as the "Big Island."

Please fill out the registration form and send payment via check or credit card. Purchase orders must have attached check payment.

Post Conference Experiences

Welcome Dinner at ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai‘i, explore exhibits and watch a 3-D full-dome planetarium show about Maunakea.  No Host Bar.

Wednesday, October 6 & Thursday, October 7 (one experience per day, option A or B)
 
Option A: Ka ‘Aina (Earth) - Hike a volcanic summit and learn about the geology, flora and fauna of this area.  Visit the Jagger Museum for an overview of volcanic activity on Hawai‘i island and the historical and contemporary research done here.  View the plumes of smoke pouring from the site of the current eruption at Halema‘uma‘u crater.  Hike out to the site of an active lava flow, viewing the spectacle after dark when the red tongues of lava are most clearly visible.
Maximum participants: 60 per day.

Option B: Ke Kai me Ka Lani (Sea & Sky) - Visit Mokupapapa Discovery Center, a NOAA facility that interprets the natural science, culture, and history of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands .  Explore both the biological and cultural aspects of Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument Sanctuary which encompasses 140,000 sq. miles of ocean water and 10 islands and atolls.  Experience bolus’, critters, etc. currently on hand at the Center.  Travel through the varied regions of Maunakea to the Maunakea Visitor Information Station (VIS), at 9,000 feet, for a presentation about the unique cultural and scientific aspects of Maunakea.  Tour some of the world’s premier observatories at the mountain’s 14,000-foot summit.  Dine in the astronomer’s dining hall. Participate in a night Star Tour outside the Visitors Center . 
Maximum participants:48 per day.

Note:  Following presentation at Mokupapapa, there will be time to browse Downtown Hilo – lunch on your own.  Meet at Mooheau Bus Station by 12:15 p.m. for 12:30 p.m. shuttle to the Maunakea Visitor Information Center. (Shuttle will leave on time).  Children under 16 years of age:  “It is strongly advised that children under the age of 16 not travel above the VIS.  Extended exposure to high altitudes could cause permanent damage to children whose bodies are still developing.” MKSS

‘Imiloa Planetarium Sessions
Wednesday, October 6 – Friday, October 8, 2010  8:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.


‘Imiloa’s state-of-the-art planetarium houses the world’s first 3D stereoscopic dome.  This workshop offers a unique opportunity to see how cutting-edge astronomical research is being presented to the public, and how the sacred mountain of Maunakea is a place where the voyage of discovery continues.  Planetarium session topics will include Hawaii ’s sky connection; cultural connections to the sky; science visualization/planetariums of the future; audience engagement; live presentations in the Dome; and a vendor showcase.  Participants will also be given a tour inside some of the premier observatories atop Maunakea and dine with astronomers at the 9,000 ft. elevation level.  As a tie-in to this workshop, there will be a Digital Full-Dome Film Festival at ‘Imiloa from Tuesday, October 5, to Sunday, October 10, including new programs from Sky Skan, Mirage 3D, Evans & Sutherland, AMNH, and more. 
Maximum enrollment is 60 with minimum enrollment at 20.
