Kulia I Ka Pono

To Be a Future Leader

Kulia I Ka Pono East Hawaii is a 6-night residential program for 7th to 9th grade students focusing on Wayfinding, Navigation, and Voyaging skills with particular emphasis on producing future leaders and stewards.

All days begin with a 30-minute fitness workout, which is followed by protocol practice that introduces them to the Hawaiian language and worldview.

Participants will be introduced to coastal sailing within Hilo Bay and will train daily in the pool and other ocean venues to assist them with swimming proficiency.

Students spend hours in the ‘Imiloa planetarium and in the field working on star identification and practical navigation skills.

Nightly, journal entries and group sharing provide opportunities for reflection, recording experiences, and establishing lasting friendships.

This program is provided through the Kamehameha Schools Enrichment Division in partnership with the ‘Aha Punana Leo Honuakai Division and ‘Imiloa.

The Kamehameha Schools preference policy is used to establish eligibility of students wishing to enroll.
